watched this documentary early today about a girl who travelled to holland with her mum, looking for relatives whom she has never met. a whole new country and a whole new culture which she knew was part of her heritage.
the effort they put into finding out about their ancestors made me think about my ancestors. my family tree.. which i know very little about. The furthest i could get for my father's family is only as far as my grandparents. I am fortunate enough to be able to see my grandfather while he was still alive.
But as for my mother's side, i didn't even get to see my grandparents. I can only now see my grandmother from old photos taken while she was still alive and say in my heart, " that is my grandma". But as for my grandfather, apparently living in the olden days and poor at that, i don't even have a picture to 'remember' him by.
it's kinda sad thinking about it. how little i know about my own family. sure i hear stories about my grandparents and my great grandparents but there is something missing in the whole picture puzzle. where did my ancestors come from? Were they originally from this country? Who in my family line has the same brown eyes as i do? (i didn't get them from my parents nor my grandparents as far as i know)
It's juz mind-boggling knowing that i may have relatives out there living in another country (and possibly speaking a whole different language from me!)
I wish there is a way to find out...
